Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Postgraduate Diploma of Science Courses

The BSc(Hons) and PGrad Dip Sci courses are available to science and biomedical science students who have completed their three year undergraduate degree.

newThe list of 2010 Honours Projects in the Department of Medicine (Austin Health) is now available for download [pdf 496 kb].

BSc (Honours)

The BSc(Hons) program is a full time one-year course that involves the completion of one advanced coursework subject and one research project subject. The breakdown into research project and coursework is 75%/25%. Each subject is made up of three components:

Research Project Coursework
Thesis 60% Literature Review 10%
Laboratory skills/supervisor 10% Assignment 10%
Seminar presentation 5% Abstract & poster presentation 5%
Total 75% Total 25%

The research component includes a project of the student's choice completed under the guidance of an academic who specialises in that particular area of research. The student is expected to publish their research work in the form of a written thesis and to orally present their work to departmental colleagues. The coursework component includes attendance at lectures, tutorials, seminars and other departmental activities. Together the two parts of the course equip graduates with the skills to complete a higher degree or to pursue a career in science and technology industries.

  • For further details of our 2009 Honours program, download the 2009 Honours Course Handbook [pdf 568 kb]. The program may be subjet to minor change in 2010.

To be eligible for admission into the BSc(Hons) program, applicants must satisfy the Faculty of Science entry requirements and are subject to the availability of suitable research topics and supervisors.

The BSc (Honours) course is administered through the Faculty of Science. Further information can be found on the BSc (Honours) website.

PG Dip Science

The PG Dip Science is a one-year full time program offered as an alternative fourth-year program to the BSc (Honours) degree.

Admission requirements into this program are different to that of the BSc (Honours). Admission to a PG Dip Science normally requires the completion of an undergraduate degree course with a major or sequence in the same, or a closely related, discipline. Admission is subject to the availability of suitable topics and supervisors.

The PG Dip Science course consists of the same components as the BSc (Honours) course but results in a different final qualification. Please see the BSc (Honours) entry above for details on the components of this course.

The PG Dip Science course is administered through the Faculty of Science. Further details can be obtained from the PG Dip Science website.

How to apply for Honours / PG Dip Science

This is a 3 step process – you must complete all 3 steps

Step 1 – Choose a project and supervisor

  • Take a look at the research projects available [pdf 496 kb].
  • Contact the staff member mentioned in your preferred field of research to discuss the project further. Arrange to meet the potential supervisor in person - take time to check out the laboratory and resources available and ask questions about the research project and the course components.
  • When you have found a project that interests you and the supervisor has agreed they would be willing to supervise you, apply formally for admission to the course (steps 2 and 3).

Step 2 – Apply for admission into the course via SIS (Student Information System)

Step 3 – Enter your project preferences via HATS (Honours Applications & Tracking System)

  • It is essential that you have already identified which projects you wish to apply for by speaking to potential supervisors (Step 1) and have applied for admission through SIS (Step 2) BEFORE you carry out Step 3.
  • Lodge your project preferences through HATS.  To do this:

    • Enter your Application ID into HATS
    • Click on Preferences then Search Projects.  Use this search to make sure that the project(s) you wish to apply for are present in HATS.  If you cannot find the project you are interested in, you should contact our Student Administration Coordinator Jo Mayall, who will be able to arrange for the project details to be entered into HATS.
    • Click on Preferences then Lodge/Update Preferences to lodge your project preferences with HATS.
  • You can update/change your preferences as many times as you wish.  However, you must ensure that your final preference list (in order of 1-10; you must enter at least one preference and can enter up to a maximum of ten preferences) is lodged by Sunday 29 November 2009.

Honours Information Sessions

Our department will have a display at the Faculty of Science Beyond Tomorrow Masters & Honours Session, held on Thursday September 10, 2009, 4.30 pm - 7.00 pm.

We will also have a display at the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Science "Do Honours in 2010" Information Session, held on Wednesday September 9, 2009, 3.15 pm - 5.15 pm.

Each October our department participates in the Austin Medical Research Week, which showcases the wide range of research undertaken by our researchers.  As part of this research week, we run an Open Day for prospective BSc(Hons) and PhD students, which will be on Tuesday October 20, 2009.

This is a great opportunity to come along meet our current students and supervisors, discuss possible projects and check out our facilities.

MSc (Research Training)

The MSc (Research Training) is a research higher degree offered as part of the Melbourne Model, with entry after a three-year undergraduate year.

In 2010, the Department of Medicine will not offer the MSc (Research Training) degree. However, we encourage students with an interest in undertaking medical research to consider taking our one-year BSc (Honours) degree instead.
