Austin IBC - Containment Facilities

Most work with GMOs needs to take place in appropriately certified physical containment (PC) facilities. For a containment facility to be certified by the OGTR, a number of criteria specified by the OGTR must be met. In some cases, application for certification can take several months to be finalised.

PC-2

GMOs of NLRD level or higher must be contained in facilities certified at a rating of at least PC-2 (both laboratories and animal houses).

PC-1

Exempt activities and NLRD/PC-1 dealings may be conducted in PC-1 facilities, and in most cases do not need to be certified by the OGTR.

All certified facilities on the Austin Campus are inspected annually by the IBC.
